USB/IDE drive not showing up in My Computer?

I have an IDE hard drive connected to a computer using an IDE to USB adapter. In device manager, under "Disk drives" the drive shows up as a "USB device". However, the device does not show up in My Computer OR in Computer Management -> Disk management. I've used the USB/IDE cable multiple times for recovering data from dead computers, so I know that's not the problem. The drive spins and it recognized in device manager, so I think its working, but can't be sure. I've tried accessing the drive on two computers, one using WinXP the other using Vista. Any suggestions?

My best bet, unplug the USB from the PC, make sure the drive is spinning before you plug it in to the PC. (plug in the power first.) then plug it in a different USB slot, and it should mount correctly.

If that's a no go, it could be that the drive you are working on is too "big" for the USB adapter to work with. Some only work with models under a TB. Also, the drive could not be getting enough power, try switching outlets.

Does the drive make any clicking noises? If so, the drive heads might be dead, and that's why you hear a spin up, but nothing shows.

Crucial SSD in Macbook Pro: Updating Firmware with a Dual Boot Partition (Windley)

Last week I replaced the harddrive in my Macbook Pro with a Crucial M4 drive.
I put the original harddrive back in the machine in place of the DVD drive,
leaving me with a machine with no DVD, but a terabyte of diskspace between the
SSD and the other drive. The SSD is amazing. If you don't have one, get one.
My machine is blazing. I couldn't be happier.

If you know much about SSD drives in Macbooks, at this point you're thinking
"you sorry sucker." Here's why: the firmware on the SSD drive needs to be
updated. Mine came with firmware version 9, not the latest. A little sticker
in the package said "update the firmware." Here's the problem: there's no good
way to do it without a DVD drive installed in the machine. Crucial provides
exactly one way that involves booting from a CDROM and it won't work from a
USB drive--at least I couldn't get it to.

This post outlines what I did to update the firmware. This is not for the
faint of heart. If you aren't comfortable with the following steps, I suggest
taking the drive out and putting ...
