USB 3.0 Is Finally Rolling Out
USB 3 is finally out on the street. Since USB connections to external hard drives for backup are rather common, this delivers a huge advance in boosting up the transfer. However as usual, you'll find a couple of caveats for being on the leading edge of technology. The USB 3 seemed to be a big hit at the CES exhibit in January of the current year.
USB 2 possesses a speed rating of 480 mBits/s, which suggests about 57 megabytes a second. But those are mystical numbers given that most users are lucky to get 25 megabytes a second and even that may be based on file size. The new USB 3 is rated at 4.8 Gbit/s or 570 megabytes per second but that too is way beyond the true speeds we got during testing. Yet once more it’s rather based on file size and kind but we did manage to hit 58 megabytes a second in a handful of tests.
So in the actual world our testing exhibited at minimum a doubling of speed and generally half the time period to copy the very same amount of information. In some cases in which there were many bigger files (1 GB or higher) we did get bursts of over 80 megabytes a second however that was the exception to the normal copy speed. But I’ll take a 50% improvement in speed and often a third of the time period to backup files any day of the week.
Moving large and dense files like graphics or music will get a rather significant enhancement. Video cameras and music devices will get a large enhancement in transferring data files to a computer. Server class machines and big workstations created for AutoCad, video editing, and music will definitely get a large boost from the new USB 3 speeds.
Moving my own audio collection around has always been a significant pain. I have over 55 GBs of music and waiting for it to copy is intolerable. Or doing a total fresh back up of my main workstation with over 120 GBs can be about as much fun as watching paint dry. In testing the new USB 3 I received a substantial enhancement over both tasks and lowered the time well in excess of two thirds which is a large improvement.
Finally for the not so good news concerning USB 3: they altered the connector part that goes towards the device and so all your current USB 2 devices will by no means see the new speeds. And as far as I could discover at this time, you can find only a handful of flash drives and external hard disk drives which are fully USB 3 compliant. And this also signifies you’ll need the new USB 3 cable to connect with virtually any new device.
One issue with current and older motherboards is that they might be limited by their particular bus interface speeds. The PCI Generation 1.0 is restricted to 2.5 GB transfer rate so it does not make any difference how fast any connection is beyond that restriction. And also the new norm for USB 3 is a bare minimum of a 5 GB transfer rate to be authorized. You'll observe an improvement in speed but in no way obtain the maximum transfer rate with these older types.
And you won’t observe USB 3 offered in many new personal computers yet. There are a couple of forward thinking businesses like Startech who sell a PCI board having USB 3 connections for about $50. And a few personal computer businesses are gradually adding USB 3 to their most recent computer models. This is particularly significant for laptop computer users since the single way now to upgrade is to make use of a media card adapter.
Both HP and Fujitsu publicized that they would be supplying USB 3 on their new laptop computer systems. Western Digital was first out of the gate with a completely new version of My Book 3.0 external hard drive that additionally is available with a USB 3 PCI adapter in a bundle offer. Seagate has suggested it will provide similar external hard disk drives by middle of the summer 2010. And flash drive maker Super Talent is offering a 16 GB flash drive that is definitely USB 3 compliant.
So in case you desire to speed up your file and computer data transfers, USB 3 will definitely provide some real world advancements in transfer speed. And when the brand new computers catch up and offer USB 3, and most of the device producers get the brand new USB 3 compliant designs inside the supply line, it will swiftly become the newest standard.

Trouble with ipod nano and usb 2.0 pci card?
i have the 3rd gen ipod nano the one with video. i had a 1.1 usb non hi speed 2 port on my pc. it is super slow downloading to my ipod. so i purchased a usb 2.0 hi speed pci card 2 port. i installed myself. now if i plug in my ipod to it, my pc says windows does not recognize this unknown device. so i go to device manager. it says there are no drivers for this device. which doesn't make any sense. it works on the 1.1 usb port, but it does not work on the 2.0 and i know i installed it right because my optical mouse is plugged into the 2.0 port and works fine. please someone help!!!! it'll take hours to convert videos to my ipod if i don't fix this. 10 points to the first person who solves my problem.
What are your computer specs? Specifically your OS? You may need to have installed the drivers that came with your PCI card unit for it to properly work and recognize the iPod.
HP unveils 27-inch all in one Z1 Workstation (Slash Gear)
Workstations are some of the most powerful computers you can buy… but man, are
they boring. With the possible exception of Apple's Mac Pro, there's really no
workstation-class machine that inspires desire, despite the backbone that they
provide for high-end work in industry. HP may have just changed that with the
unveiling of their Z1, [...]
