USB Ports: A Quick Introduction
It is probable that you are using one concurrently as you read this. If not, then as a computer user it is probably something that you likely use almost daily. Yes, I am talking about the humble USB slot - the input taken for granted by those who grew up in the digital age. USB was invented in '96 but PCs didn't always have them. In fact, they only started to become a standardized method of input in '98 when the 1.1 version was released upon consumers.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is perfect for connection because unlike serial and parallel jacks, they supply power toperipherals and therefore, no extra power is required in order to get PC components such as mice, external hard drives and chargers (etc) to do their job. Because so many peripherals use USB connection today, a lost input cable for a device is less of a problem than ever, as these are often interchangeable.
If you are not careful, USB input jacks and slots can become broken and/or damaged very easily. This is a big issue if your laptops only method of input are its USB input jacks. These are some precautions that you can take to ensure yours continue to work correctly for as long as possible:
- Take great care in order not to knock the USB input jack of any computer hardware while it is connected to your computer as this can bend or snap the endpoints of your device or host (the computer which powers the device).
- Using a can of compressed air can aid the safe a speedy removal of unwanted debris out of USB ports. There are even USB shaped devices designed to clean inside ports which are available on the market if cash is no restriction.
- If you do not have a can of compressed air, than you can keep the USB ports of your computer/laptop clean using a dry cotton bud. Dust and debris can get in the way of a clear connection between the host and the device. For safety reasons MAKE SURE THAT THE COMPUTER IS SWITCHED OFF!
- Using a cotton bud on USB endpoints of your peripheral is also a good idea.
defination of switch,port,host and routers?
switch... a network hub... that is selective on what it repeats to the various legs of the network
Port... a software concept... it's a sub-structure of the IP address which allows attention, via it's "port" number
Host... any computer that supports CLIENTS....
Router... a device to connect dissimilar network addresses.
Without a router, you can't "talk" with any other workstation that is not on you network address.
