I was reading reviews about the 20-inch and 23-inch Apple Cinema displays, and a disturbing number of people said they had pixel problems, ports (USB, firewire) blowing out, and simply dead monitors after a couple of years.
First question: Has anyone else had this problem?
Secondly, what is a good alternative to Apple displays? I like the fact that Apple products work so well with Macs, but don't like the idea of spending $600 and up on a product with such a short life. Or is an extended warranty the answer?
BTW, I have a MacBook Pro. I pretty much use it as a CPU when I'm not traveling, and work off a large desktop monitor.

You could go either way. Most of the cost you are paying for is good looks and decent performance. You would do well to check out Samsung monitors. They are quite high quality. Also, monitors don't have to be Apple brand to work with Apple. Any will work. Just get a nice Samsung with a good warranty and you'll be fine.
