How Controlling your Fixed Assets Can Reduce Insurance Costs
Paying for insurance premiums, which are consistently rising, are becoming a real problem for both large and small organizations to deal with in their budgets. The situation has become even more emphasised as a result of the recession gathering momentum over the past year. Yet often overlooked is the fact that according to recent findings, as much as 70% of businesses are overinsuring their fixed assets!
The problem arises from a systemic lack of accurate and up to date information in the asset register, the database which keeps all the information on tangible assets. This inevitably leads to businesses insuring equipment, hardware and machinery they no longer own. In another case, premiums could be lowered just by more accurately calculating the depreciation in the value of a fixed asset.
What can be even worse is the fact that when it does come around to submitting an insurance claim, assessors are far more likely to dispute the claim or pay less due to a lack of detailed evidence on owned assets, their values and their locations. This information includes detailed descriptions, serial numbers and proof of locations.Think of a similar parallel at home - if your house was burgled and you claimed on house insurance, imagine what the outcome would be if you failed to provide a reciept for your TV, computer and other items.
A lot of the time when an asset is replaced or thrown out, it is no longer seen as a problem by the financial people since its value on the company books has degraded to zero. What this means is that updating the asset database is not high on the to do list for many. However, if and when the company does need to make a claim on the policy, insurance investigators will certainly not look kindly on the asset register not being up to date and fully detailed.
The lack of an up to date asset register is probably common knowledge to many organizations. But I don't feel many organizations know just how bad this is. Even less known is the extent of the savings that could be made from proper asset managment on insurance costs, and the gains in improving the success and outcomes of claims. According to an expert in fixed asset management solutions, the amount of overpayment in insurance due to poor asset management stands at a staggering 20%. Surely that justifies some serious time and investment on making sure you have a decent fixed asset tracking system in place.
Another iPad 3 Component Leak Shows “A5X” Processor (crunchgear?)
Among the expected chances to the next generation of iPad is an improved
processor. Seeing as the original iPad had the A4 and the iPad 2 had the A5,
it was logical to guess that the iPad 3 would have an A6. As it turns out,
that's not the case: a leaked picture of the iPad 3's logic board (or what is
claimed to be so) shows not A6, but **A5X **written on top of the chip. In a
way it's totally inconsequential; not only is the naming scheme brand new and
potentially arbitrary, but we barely understand what's happening under the
hood in the A5. A5X or A6, what difference does it make? Well, here's the
thing.
