How Western Digital Became the 2nd Largest Hard Drive Manufacturer
Hard drive recovery is conducted on many different types of hard drive. No two hard drive makers are the same, Western Digital are one of the most popular hard drive manufacturers today, here is a quick article on the way the landmark stages of the company across the past few decades.
On April 23, 1970, a Motorola employee named Alvin B. Phillips set up Western Digital Corporation, now the world's second biggest hard disk drive manufacturing company, 2nd only to Seagate. It was initially named General Digital which had a quick stint at manufacturing metal oxide semiconductor or MOS used in increasing electronic signals.
1970's
In the early 70's, WD made money by selling calculator chips and soon became the world's number 1 manufacturer of calculator chips. But economic crisis struck in the mid-70's so that in 1976, Western Digital announced bankruptcy. There were 2 big factors which led to this economic disaster: the oil crisis which made a drastic loss in buying power globally and the bankruptcy of its largest calculator customer, the Bowmar Instrument. Worse, the organization's main provider of start up capital took away its support. The struggling company was compelled to stand on its own wobbly feet.
Western Digital Corp emerged from the decline and produced some innovate products in this time, notably the MCP-1600, a multi-chip microprocessor employed by Pascal and DEC and by some floppy disk drive controller chips. The company survived.
1980's
Western Digital embarked upon the data storage industry at this time. Just about simultaneously, they were making disk drive controllers. Then, in 1983, they won the contract to provide IBM with controllers. The controller they manufactured became the foundation for the ATA interface, which has become the interface standard for the link of storage devices. The enormous profits brought about by these controllers not only brought the company back to viability but fueled its corporate expansion too.
Western Digital used their huge revenue from ATA controllers to move into being the Personal computer industry's manufacturer of general-purpose OEM hardware. Western Digital made graphic cards, core logic chipsets and SCSI controller chips for disk and tape devices which various firms bought and retailed under their brand names. During this period also, the organization introduced many "firsts," the 1st single-chip SCSI interface, the first single-chip implementation of the floppy disk controller circuitry, the granddaddy of modern super I/O chips and the first single-chip ATA hard disk drive controller.
The year 1988 was a fateful time for Western Digital as it purchased the production assets of Tandon, a Computer hardware maker. Due to this, WDC was able to produce its "Centaur" line of ATA and XT attachment drives.
1990's
The start of this decade proved to be tricky for
Western Digital
. Initially, they were doing so well with their "Caviar" series that they decided to sell their other divisions. For example, the division making graphic cards was sold to Phillips, the floppy drive controller division went to SMC markets and their SCSI controller business went to Adaptec. But in 1995, the technology of the company's "Caviar" series was exceeded by emerging competition and the company fell once more into a slump.
In 1998, WDC sought the aid of IBM and had access to both the technology and facilities of IBM. Soon, WD gained the industry's respect when it came out with their "Expert" line of drives.
2000 to the present
In 2001 WDC became the first to offer ATA hard drives with 8 MB of cache buffer. The company fast-tracked their technological edge and dotted the decade with several discoveries. In 2006, WDC came up with the My Book line of mass market external disk drives, including a one Terebyte version in the next year.
WDC also came up with their GP range of hard drives which had very low power consumption, low heat dissipation and incredibly great performance.
In 2009, they released the first 2TB internal disk drive and in October of this year, the 1st 3TB internal hard drive was announced.
Western Digital Corporation has proven its resilience and remains as one of the forces to reckon with in the hard drive industry.
Jason Sloan runs a data recovery business called Kingdom Data Recovery Edinburgh who service all the United Kingdom. He has got many articles on his site which refer to issues with storage and handy information regarding stopping data loss.
What is below computer worth? Or should I buy new one with Vista OS instead of Windows 2000?
Dual Intel Xeon 2.0Ghz Processors
1GB Ram
3 - 34GB IBM SCSI Hard Drives
HP DVD Writer
Rainbow iKey 2000 Smartcard Virtual Reader
3Com Gigabit Server NIC
ATI Radeon 9000 Display Adaptor
Floppy Drive
Realtek Onboard Sound
Windows 2000 Professional
Adobe Illustrator CS
Adobe Photoshop
I bought it at a company auction that went bankrupt. I went all through it and made sure everything worked and cleaned it up. I used to work there, so I know that they spent close to $2K on the system when they bought it 3 years ago. The onboard NIC isn't turned on because they installed a better card to use. You'll probably need the drivers for your modem though, in case it doesn't recognize it.
that pc would be worth around £200 or $400.
I dual boot with xp pro and vista ultimate, and have never had any problems with either one, they both perform about the same, with xp having a very slight advantage in the graphics dept.
there is nothing wrong with vista, if you have 2 gigs of ram and a decent graphic card it's fine.
try it on a decent pc before you jump on any passing bandwagons.
